Galewood is one of three neighborhoods in the Austin community area on the far west side of Chicago. The other Austin neighborhoods include North Austin, South Austin, and The Island. Often associated with Galewood, but not part of the Austin community area is Montclare, which shares many of the same amenities such as shopping centers, the former public library location and Sayre Rutherford Park. Galewood's borders are North Avenue to the south, Harlem Avenue to the west, Naragansett to the east, and Grand Avenue to the north. In a historically very segregated city, that continues to be so in many places, Galewood is among the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago. In its early days, it was a largely Greek and Italian community. Today, it is a mixed White, Black, and Latine community. About 10,000 people live in Galewood today, in ~3,600 households.
